Last year, we planted a few dense sunflower rows in key areas of the farm and we enjoyed them immensely. But along came August, when these flowers were in full bloom and we had some storms that knocked more than the sunflowers to the ground.
We had planned on harvesting some of the flower heads for seed, but now we had to do things differently because all of the plants were a tangled mess. The net result was that we harvested some of the seed, but then didn't get to moving it away from where the rodents and other critters could find the seed heads in time.
One of those places was Casa Verde. It was only supposed to be temporary. But, you know how things go, the seeds stayed there longer than we intended and by the time I thought to get them out of there, it was too late.
Well, Casa Verde lost its plastic in the December derecho and we decided it wasn't necessary to cover it for this year's limited production. Even though the ground is mostly covered inside of Casa Verde, there must have been some access to the soil.
How do I know? Well, check this out.
I had forgotten exactly how tall and majestic some of the varieties were that we grew in 2021. And since this particular plant had no real competition, it has had the opportunity to grow to its full potential.
And we've been enjoying watching it stretch to the sky and slowly become what it was meant to be.
Unplanned and unlikely.
And entirely appreciated.
