Care for More

The old saying is that you shouldn't worry about things that are out of your control.

But, I am here to say that we need to have concern for things that we know are bigger than ourselves.  For, if we pass on paying attention to, caring for, and attempting to do something to make things better - we condone wrongs and abandon those who could use our help.

I certainly understand the very real wisdom in that saying - don't worry about things that are out of your control.  We can wear ourselves out and make ourselves sick both mentally and physically if we try to take on all of the ills of this world.  That approach does no one any good - and it does nothing to make anything better.

We go right back to this "balance" thing I keep harping about to myself and to whomever might want to contemplate it with me.  If all you do is worry about it all, it does no good.  And, if all you do is ignore it all because it is "beyond your control," that is no better.

So, I am here to remind myself (and you) to care for more than you and balance that with an understanding of your own limits.  We have more power than we think to make improvements, yet we may never see much evidence of what we have done.

On one hand, I hear and see people who seem like they are constantly screaming at the rest of the world because everything is so badly messed up.  Being outraged all the time doesn't help you to be better and it only turns people off who might otherwise listen to you.  Constant worry and alarm only wears all of us down until we have no hope.

On the other hand, ignorance and apathy are no good either.  Yet, I hear the equivalent to "we don't know and we don't care" over and over again.  That attitude only makes others wonder if you are worthy of any attention when you actually need help (and that time always comes).  Ignorance is not bliss and apathy is an excuse.

Once again, it seems that the hardest road is the best road.

Be better and care for more - but worry less.  Care implies empathy and considered action that might actually make a difference.  Worry only brings about ulcers and makes you blind to beauty and goodness when it sneaks into the picture.

Remember to take a moment today to reflect on something that made you... or someone else... feel good about life today.  Better yet, do something to give someone else something good to reflect on.

Care for more.
